Stavros, for what it's worth, I don't think any person written about by the ancient Greeks, didn't have a Greek name, regardless of where they came from, so why don't you give every one else a break!cheer! :)

And Yes! if they had met a man from China, he too probably would have been given a Greek name!

I apologise for the previous posts Stavros, you are quite entitled to your opinions and I wish not to enter into a debate over the matter. If a Moderator should come across *my* posts in this thread , could they delete them for me.In appreciation. Cheers!

Hi Smitty,I know what Stavros is saying, and it is of course a valid point. But actually you make a very good point yourself about the Hellenisation of names. All the bestMarcus

Couldn't you write sth more than that? Typicall greek ........Let me tell you sth more . Have you ever heard about the theory that nowdays greeks have nothing to do with the ancient ones of Homer. Have you ever heard that Iliad was not written by a single writter. Do you know that once upon a time excisted Babylon and later on it was Egypt and many others....Try finding your Zeus in the name of Nimrod first babylonian king and search for Alexander in the ancient Egypt! Who told you that Alexander is Greek name? What makes you so shure?
If you know sth that we don't know tell us , i'm ready to challenge your opinion ..........

Well, I don't think it is accurate to say that anybody mentioned in Greek sources has 'Greek' names. Some that come to mind:Sitalces
Sisamnes
Smerdis
Cambyses
XerxesI am sure I can find many more. My point is that the Greeks could distinguish and write non-Greek names and then there were the Greek names:Alexandros....Defender of Men
Philippos...Lover of Horses
Archelaos....Leader of the peopleetc...

The theory that the modern Greeks have nothing to do with the Greeks of Homer is less credible than the Albanians being related to the Illyrians. After all, there was an 'Albania' in the Caucasas in the Middle Ages. Coincidence? As for Alexandros it is a Greek name derived from Greek etymology (The Defender of Men)attested to in Greek sources numerous times (such as the Thessalian tyrant Alexander a couple of generations prior to Alexander the Great. Let us see your evidence to the contrary.

you shouldnt get personal when you swear, it displays your unprofessional approach. being anti- greek wont help your worthless post either.this site has some very educated people with a broad knowledge of Alexander, and one thing is for sure, He is NOT Albanian.please provide evidence. dont waste your time, you dont have any.

hello Marcusreading smitty's post and your reply, is it safe to say that you both think the greeks hellenised Alexander. Alexander speaking greek, worshiping greek gods, spreading hellenisation to the east, etc.. was something that was forced upon Alexander? and Alexander played along to feel part of something bigger at the time? that is the vibe i am getting from your posts.cheersStavros

None of my words meant i'm anti-greek , at the contrary its you that always have been anti-Albanian
By the way it's you that have wasted too much time by trying too manipulate facts and history and to interprate them the way you like. And your time is up!
I can see how much educated and studied people change opinions in this site when not a single one said a single word or brought a second opinion that yes there are proves that the albanians and ilyrians and epir are the same people because they do speak the same language! Maybe this site covers a bunch of shovinists ! Poor them ,they don't know where they are or where they are going .Nobody can help them think as the times we are living need to!
Stavros try reading sth from ARISTIDH KOLA and maybe you will even find the reason why he died the same way with his two other vise-chairmans of his organization.

Actually, Agron, I have been there (to Epirus) several times, the most recently was last summer. I have visited Dodoni twice and stayed in both Ioannina (3 times) and Igoumentisa. I didn't hear any Albanian spoken by Greeks there but maybe I missed something? Perhaps nearer the Albanian border? But Arta, where Olympias was born, is far south and actually in the Greek part or on the border of it at least. And Philip certainly wasn't Illyrian though he married an Illyrian woman.
