It Does Matter!

Post by Nicator »

Hello all,Much time has passed since the great one made his world changing tour. Many authors have had their say, and many more will before the century is over. Some of us will write great books. Some of us will change the perception of Alexander and his time. We have a responsibility to history. What we write here will be studied for insights and information for scholars, psychologists, and military minds for centuries to come. Make no mistake about it...what we discuss on this forum does matter. We have an insight which most scholars have not been privy to. We have each other...and the seive of our collective minds to reflect off of. Let's make the most of it...let's make Alexander proud.

I think this site and our views are ephemeral, it may create some widening of scope and broadening of views but little other long-term effect.Susan

How would you compare the success of Harry Potter to that of Alexander for making money?

Nick,I think that the most effective way to understand Alexander is to understand the environment in which he lived. To me, if any historian or author can bring the climate alive so that I can understand why Alexander behaves as a slaughterer of innocents then I will appreciate that historian or author.I am not convinced that he deteriorates over the course of time at all. It appears to me that he becomes more and more grandiose and bolder and bolder with each advance. I see him going up the ladder of conqueror success and finally succumbing to the "evils" of success. But I also believe that while his success is merited and awesome, it is also because his adversaries were incompetent and terrified by his awesome reputation. King Darius, it appears, has become overly confident and was too scornful of his adversary, the Young Alexander. His attack of Thebes is matched only by his rout of other victims along his path, whether those of Tyre, or of Persepolis. He does not change in his fiercesome annihilations. His approval rating is high only because he shows sensitivity at times to women of high rank, such as Sisygambis and Queen Ada. He is kind to the Greeks who had been destroyed by the Persians who he found waiting for him at the gates of Persepolis. It is in his kindnesses and his generosities that he gains approval from his fans.So my contention is that were it not for the savagery of his opponents would he be so savage in kind. He fought fire with fire, and that is survival for that period. To make Alexander proud is not in the scope of any historian. Only Alexander could do that. But I appreciate your wanting to make the Pothos org. a worthwhile effort, and I am confident that you are doing just that.

helloyou may need to ask oliver stone? :) i dont know. i know if i had kids, especially a son, i would not want him running around with a broom between his legs, thats for sure. if he was imagining that he was the greatest conquerer of all time then i would be one of his soldiers. hehekind regardsstavros
