----UPDATE----- PART 1

In the 80's, in the modern town of Arta, located in western Greece, a cenotaph monument of 12,4m in length and 2,5m high was found in the cemetery of the ancient town. Two parts of its surface were made in order to be bent which was impressive and pioneer for its time. The visible side is inscribed "στοιχηδόν" and "βουστροφηδόν" (a L. Da Vinci kind of writing to humor it) writing styles in archaic alphabet of the ancient city of Amvrakia which is similar to the ancient Korintian alphabet. From the entire epigram five elegiach two-liners are saved:

In the excavator- archaeologist's opinion this is a cenotaph that the ancient city of Amprakia (Amvrakia- colony of Korinth) constructed. The deceased faced along with their allies- the Korinthians, the people of Corfu in a naval battle and ground battle. Their army and ships where anihilated near the river Arahthos next to the delta it creates in the Amvrakikos Bay. The river was navigable by ship. The inscription dates back to late 6th BC.

This of course is not a scientific presentation of the inscription for which there are more than one interpretations from qualified epigraphists.

I despair in tears for these marvellous men for which bull sacrifices were conducted. Children will be able to honor me and the generation of us both which (the generation) those who stood against me from the vast-in-open-space-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
in the cherished homeland a heavy mourning settled at that time. As far as the city of Amvrakia is concerned, since the army suffered the same fate as the ships, (the commander) Kallitas is now in the dark chamber of Hades. Without a doubt it is recognized how well navigable the river (Arahthos) is when going towards the town which (the river) met Death, along with these men.


The monument had another inscription which was not placed sideways as ususual but vertically. It is saved in Korinthian alphabet and honors the Corinthians who also died to save their colony.

The first stele is the Amvrakian alphabet. The rest are idiosynchrocies of other inscriptions of that same area and the fourth is the Korinthian alphabet which was used for the vertical inscription of the Korinthian fallen warriors of Amvrakia.


The archaeologist who excavated and was responsible for the publishing of all this material is I. Andreou.
