showcase created

Post by nick »

Hi Companions -I created a showcase paragraph in "Books" in order to publish previews of your new books on the site. Please take a look in the Books section. I could always give the paragraph a more prominent place as soon as there is enough input. Use my e-mail to send me your excerpts. I will try to behave like a responsible editor.Regards -

Nice one, Nick.Crikey! Now I suppose I'll have to submit something, after all our talking about it!I'll have a look for a suitable excerpt, and see if I can send something over to you early next week. All the bestMarcus

Superb idea, Nick!!!! Alexander lives on in our minds' images set to typeset. Hmmmm, this is tempting for me---to share an excerpt. I am a bit timid to expose my excerpts, considering the literary sytle, level of eroticism, and *voice* in which I am writing . Very few people even know I am writing an ATG manuscript, which is why I use a psuedonymn on this site. The Amazon Queen fears greatly of, well...I am over-protective of my creation...I may have to take the Writer's 5th Amendment. This is a great idea so all writers here at pothos may share and present their "pearls" of creation.Go in the speed of the gods!!!Amazon Queen

Excerpt word length limit?

Post by karen »

Hi Nick:Just read my excerpt on the site, and it's nice to see it there, except for two things -- it's the *first* version I sent you, not the second, and the second is the correct one. (Sorry about the confusion.)Second -- and this is the reason I'm posting this to the forum rather than emailing privately -- it's only the first part of the scene I sent. If I had been aware that there was a word length limit, I'd have submitted something shorter. So will you please tell us authors who are sending you excerpts what the word length limit is? That way we can send something we think best represents our work at the given length. I have a different part in mind, and will send it once I know the acceptable length. Thanks in advance!Love & peace,
Karen

Sorry to hassle you Nick, but I'm inclined to agree with Karen. If the permissable word count is relatively low it'll be difficult to select any worthwhile vignette. I was going to send on about five thousand words of one section as it's one of the only bits I have that can be followed without having a firm grasp of the plot prior to that point. If that's a non-runner I'll chop and change accordingly.Best wishes.Aengus.

Re: Excerpt word length limit?

Hi Karen -Love & peace. I replaced your excerpt with the proper one. This is just due to the pothos.org editing system disconnecting frequently - making editing twice as time consuming. I tend to get annoyed when I add a few changes, then getting a message the site is no longer available by the time I push the "save" button. I apologize.Yes, I never mentioned a word length limit - because I did not figure that would be any problem. As I see it now, all author's should understand that a web page has a sort of natural limit to the words contained in one page. To be 100% honest: I just cut the excerpt at the moment I began to think... "yes, now I have a very clear picture what the book is like". That is the word length criterium as far as I am concerned.Of course, if you want to swap this excerpt with another one, fine. We could also rearrange the set up, creating far more space for excerpts. That would depend on how many excerpts are submitted. Up to now, you contribution is the only proper excerpt. I included Aengus as well - though it is not an exceprt - because it showed how much time and effort are required for writing a real good book.Best regards -

Hi Aengus -We can do that, but it requires a total new approach to the showcase. Please let me think a second.Regards -

Wider entries?

Post by susan »

Nick
I'm replying on the forum, too, although I've just sent you an e-mail. I think that we need a different, wider layout for the showcase and some of the paragraphs, because there is too much content to fit in the current narrow central table. I've only put in a few alphabet entries, under the letter A, and already the entry is getting long. You can do this by adding a wide image which forces the table wider, which would be an interim solution.RegardsSusan

Re: new Showcase lay out

Post by nick »

Hi Companions -There is now a totally new lay out of the Showcase. This would enable everyone to include every excerpt that would fit in the technical restrictions of the site.I hope that everyone is happy now. I always remember the words of Thomas after my first e-mail: "This site is yours as well as mine." So I would like to continue that approach.Regards -

More suggestions

Post by karen »

Hi Nick:I suggest a copyright notice at the beginning of each entry. No it won't stop people from stealing lines if they really want to, but it puts out a bit more of a declaration of ownership, and might discourage casual or inadvertent plagiarists. At the bottom of mine as it is as the moment, there's a line saying "written by webmaster," which I think some readers might find confusing... can we change that?Love & peace,
Karen

Hi Karen -Thanks - I think I will call it a day for now. Yes, I would like images (cover), but remember that the pothos-machine doesn't allow large ones. I can't recall how large - let's say a max 10 kB or 20kB web image.I will add the copyright notice. But I think all people publishing on the web should know their words WILL be copied - no matter what.Regards -

Well done, Nick! I'm amazed at how quickly and efficiently you set it up! (This, coming from a computer illiterate, me.) The cover design arrived yesterday morning, so I would assume the release date is very close at hand. When it arrives I will include my syn and excerpt. Many thanks- cheers.

Thank you all for the nice words. Credits must go to Thomas who designed a near perfect browser-editing system for pothos.org - which means most changes are easy and fast. Unless you want something very specific.I can not delete the "written by webmaster" notice under the article. Only Thomas can. I have chosen the most neutral option, "webmaster", not "written by nick" or someting like that. I added the copyright notice under the excerpt.(Aengus, I know that you text is not a real excperpt, not meant to be part of the book. However, I enjoyed it so much I had to include it. If a book started with an introduction like this one, I would start reading right away.)Regards - Nick
