Alexander besieged Ecbatana?

An interesting piece on RogueClassicism today.

This is a new idea to me. I don't recall that Alexander had any problems at Ecbatana - when he left Persepolis he passed through Pasargadae and made a brief stop at Ecbatana before resuming his pursuit of Darius. I hadn't heard before any suggestion that he was required to besiege the city.

That's an absurd story. First of all, Alexander was in hot pursuit of Darius III and could ill afford waiting months for his message to and reply from Aristotle to happen. Secondly, Alexander was an artist of and genius at war and would have thought of building a dam and flooding the city very easily himself. This unrivaled superb strategos would have hardly consulted a philosopher on military tactics!

Plus isn't this old "news" anyway..I seem to remember reading about this "discovery a few years back..
