Interesting quote of Alexander to Olympias. Alexander the Me

Post by tino »

"he was ignorant, no doubt, of the wise answer given by Alexander the Great to his mother when she was urging him to put to death an innocent person, and in the hope of getting what she wanted reminded him that she had carried him for nine months in her womb. 'Ask some other boon, my good mother; no benefit can be put in the balance with the life of a man.'Ammianus Marcellinus XIV 11.21

I apologize for not answering this earlier. This is an interesting quote although I do suspect it's apochryphal, mostly because of the similarity to Alexander's own remark about the high price his mother charged for the nine months in her womb. Anyway, thanks for the ref. I had only one other quote from Marcellinus so now I shall have to do some further investigating of his work. :-)Best regards,Amyntoros
