Kronia Polla, Alexandros. Thanks for the reminder (how could I forget?) Modern Greeks celebrate 'name days' rather than birth days. I wonder what the ancients did? I will wear my Alexander ring (copy of the coin produced by Lysimachus) and maybe the pendant copied from the same coin. And I should, by all rights, spend some time today writing on my novel which is, after all, about his son's short life and the end of A's dynasty.

I bought an icecream for everyone in my office - telling them this
was for Alexander's birthday, so I'm not a soft touch everytime it
gets hot & the a/c breaks down! Only one complained that Alexander wouldn't have had
icecreams, so could he have an ouzo instead... hmmm... discuss!...

This is funny as I just reserved a copy of the Stone movie Alexander at Sam Goody's. It was the last day for my triple rewards so I finally gave in and reserved a director's cut copy...and told the cashier that today is Alexander's birthday according to NASA, and John O'Brien maybe too. I am opting for the 2 disc version of the movie. I hope it will be good!

Happy Birthday IndeedHail Folks. Ive always asumed Alexander born 20th July 356 bc.However were the years etc the same then as they are now. Maybe Im wrong but wasnt August and July later added to the Calender by the Romans or were those months already there and called something else.I guess we can assume that the Greeks had a year measured out with there minds but I wonder if it were the same.Alexander was basically born in a month named after a Roman general?Kenny

Dear Ruthaki, may I recommend you a site which has to do with Alexander IV? It belongs to a museum in France which possesses an extraordinary bronze statue of Lysippean style, which is interpreted as a portrait of Alexander IV by a major scholar of Alexander's iconography, professor Paolo Moreno of Rome University "La Sapienza". Of course it is a hypothesis, but the statue is so disarmingly beautiful that the site is worth having a look (even though it speaks only French!); I wish it could be inspirational for your book. Here is the address:
http://www.mds-agde.com/autresite/expo/sommaire.html
From the homepage follow he links on the upper right corner of the page.
All the best
