One of the horror stories from the Macedonian march through the Gedrosian desert is that the soldiers once -somewhere beyond Pasni- camped on a place that looked safe, but that during the night, when no one expected it, water came down from the mountains and washed away tents and weapons.Perhaps it is interesting to see that not much has changed: http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/4256107.stm tells how heavy rains made a dam burst its banks. The story is depressingly familiar.Jona

That story has always interested me. It reminds me so much of the story of George Washington making his camp on the banks of the river near Ft. Duquesne, now Pittsburgh. There is just something that is familiar in those two scenarios.
