The Movie

Post by selket676 »

I awaited this movie with the hopes of a dreamer. Unfortunately my dreams were crushed. While I am happy to see someone willing to attempt to take on Alexander and his legend, I was disappointed that so much of what made him the legend that still lives today was not captured in this film. The scene that most upset me was the bedroom scene on his wedding night to Roxanne. Anyone who has an understanding of ancient Macadonia or even Greek customs would understand that this most likely would not have happened. However, of course, unless we were in fact there, no one really knows what happened on that night. But, I cannot help but think, that according to ancient accounts, that Alexander was a man to whom virtue and custom were all important, so to think he would have treated his new wife and his wedding night to a fight, is absurd. I do thank Oliver Stone for the courage to produce this film. But, I wish someone else would step up to the plate. I am hungry for more!!!!

Wait, what's the critique of the wedding scene? I
mean, the movie's dumb on so many different
levels, and the wedding scene is dumb, but I
don't see how it violates Greek customs or
Alexander's character. On what grounds?
Greeks don't fight on their wedding night?
Greeks don't go in for rough sex? Alexander
would have made sure Roxane knew he had a
male lover earlier? Later? What?

Hello ElizabethThis scene bothered many people for quite a few reasons, culturally, historically, even story-wise. Cinematically, it was the laughable growling, bad acting and worse dialogue at this point that lost the purpose of the scene for me. I couldn't believe Farrell's pathetic kitty-cat snarl. Was this rough sex conqueror style? HA!HA!HA! was my reaction. I had the good manners not to laugh out loud, but it was a close call.As for the knife to the throat thing, even the dialogue a this point, seemed to be a direct copy of a similar scene in Troy where at least it made more sense. So, I agree with you, here's to a good tale well-told in the future!Cheers
