Hi guys,
I was wondering what might have happened if Alexander was defeated, not obliterated though. Would the Athenians and other Greek "allies" have rebelled or would Antipater managed to keep things under control? Please tell me your replies!

This is not really an "if", it more or less happened after Alexander was wounded by the Mallians. The Greeks in Sogdia revolted and started to fight themselves a way back to the Mediterranean, the Brahmans revolted, the satrap of Gandara was killed, and there were insurrections in Iran.Personally, I would add that Alexander overcompensated these setbacks and that this is one reason for his self-deification, his lack of respect for the formalities of the Treaty of Corinth, the Decree on the Exiles, and ultimately the Lamian war.Jona

Hello,I was just wondering myself along similar lines.Antipatros fought and won Agis III of Sparta- 331 near Megalopolis. Now, let's just say that the Spartan's had won and not only that, but had then taken the battle further afield and taken Macedonia. Would Alexander have turned around and just come home to set things right?I think that Alexander wouldn't. Maybe he would have sent Craterus to sort it out on his behalf but go home? I really do doubt it. (Excuse the parallelism but Achilles knew he would never return and Alexander could be no different) What do you reckon?Best regards,
Dean.

Hey Dean,
I was also wondering along those same lines. I believe your thinking is correct. Alex probably wouldnt have gone home, hemight risk losing all of his hard fought lands, but he might have taken a brief respite and he probably would have sent Ptolmy or Perdikkas home. Good thinking!

Re: Alexander is defeated!!!
He defintely would have returned to Macedon. He had his mother and sister to worry about, and even if they were killed, he would have to avenge them by the laws of blood feud. Not to mention his men would not tolerate not going back to recapture Macedon.A lot of dead Greeks would have been the result. But then he would have left again.
