Alexander the Great costume

Post by Elise »

I am doing a project on Alexander and am required to dress up as him at the end of the project. I've looked at a few pictures but few are appropriate.Do you know of any pictures or places to go where I might get a good costume?

Look at this one:

This is Alexander and - supposedly - his friend Craterus on a lion hunt. Look at the bright side: it is cheap and certainly not very time consuming.

hi elise, to dress like ATG it depends at what stage of the trip you like best. In the bginning before Afgahnastan it would be Macedonian style see Pompey mosaic of the battle of Issus..Usually a tunic of whit and reddish but always a purple cape with yellow trim. After a while Alexander began to dress Oriential or Persian with turban, robes, and slippers. I believe he dressed that why until he dies in 323bce, so take your pick.

Elise--
You also need to consider the event for which he was dressing. Battle dress would have included some armour and no jewelry. A small dinner party with friends was not nearly as ostentatious as a state reception. Also during the noted Persian phase, he would have worn more jewelry as they were impressed by extravagance. Basically, any good costume reference should give you a basic look. Check in the Theatre section of your local library.
However, the easiest will be the athletic/hunting look suggested earlier.
Good Luck.
Elise

Thanks for the help with my costume

Thank you all for your suggestions. As I am a girl, I don't really have the right attributes to take the cheap route that nick suggested. Also, my school has a dress code. It's not real strict but I think you have to wear something...I appreciate the laugh. And I'll check out the theatrical section and wear a purple cape with yellow trim...Thanks all.

Elise, If you don't mind, would you take a photo of yourself in the costume that you select and share it with us? Thanks, Jan :)
