Although, to be fair, it wasn't Alexander who spread Greek culture ... it was the Greeks who followed in his train who did that.ATBMarcus

Marcus....bang on.A much unrealised fact. Much of the "culture" Alexander introduced to the "uncultured barbarians" was imported along for the entertainment and morale of his troops. In fact every time he's mentioned in the sources as having poets and tragic actors perform it is for the benefit of the officers and the troops - particularly the sop of the "games".The implanted Macedonian governates (Hellenistic "kingdoms") that followed did exactly the same. Transplanted ruling elites with their gymnasium, theatre and "upper towns": only for the Macedonians first, Greeks second and "hellene-o-philes" third.The realpolitik of Hellenistic kingdoms.Paralus.
