First Hooligan Thug OF Antiquite.
CompanionsI just watched a very interesting programe on lost Civilisations. Its Theme Was Persia presented By 2 Scholars one From Wales another Woman Proffesor from Newcastle University. Its very starnge the slant people put on something if its there forte. Of course they Dismaissed Macedonians as mountainous thugs and Alexander the worlds first Hooligan. They Claimed the Persian empire was placid and based on tollerance for all the combinations of its empire. I doubt they just entered these countries of conquest and placidly over ran them. Surely they conquered by brute force.Hence the Egyptian hatred for them. Then as far as Alexander been the first hooligan. They forgot to mention Xerxes Looting and burning Athens. And surely our posrthonians can think of Persian looting and vandalism.I guess I got the hump for our guy to have been labeled a mountainous thug. Maybe he was but I am more sure he was more civilised and understanding than the racist Greeks. Can any porthonians recall any other Persian Thuggery. And indeed are these two scholars been too selective for there own good.

Kennyx,I have time for Cyrus, who was a great diplomat and strategist and demonstrated tolerance (whether out of humanity or diplomacy is hither nor thither). However, Xerxes and the two Dariui (pl. of Darius?!) that followed were defintely not the same calibre of man. Now all this could be based on my limited knowledge of these hegemons and a little hint of Western propaganda!I am in total agrement about your comment that Alexander was not a racist like the rest of the Greeks. I am convinced this was mainly attributed to having an Epirote mother and Macedonian father. (I believe her to be Albanian, not that Epirus is Albanian, but consider perhaps that races throughout history have been more transient than we give them credit for). Furthermore, little has changed between ancient and modern Greeks. I guess most of the racism demonstrated today is by proximity, i.e. towards Albania, Turkey. Of interest, I read that Athens is the only EU capital that does not have a mosque......not Allah's will, for sure. Not to mention how Greeks still quarrel amongst themselves at their own perril! It seems that it is not just language that has demonstrated continuity! Don't worry, I speak as a second generation Greek, born and bred in London, whose father is a Northern Epirote (ethnic Greek from Albania), mother from Pyla, Cyprus, (only village where the Greek and Turkish communities 'live' together) and an Albanian wife! I have witnessed the racism of Greeks toward the ethnic Greeks of Albania (who consider them Greek when it suits them and vica versa). Not to mention comments made to me about my wife...Poor is the man that places boundaries within their mind, when the World outside is already full of them.Everybody slants history to their benefit. This could well be the case of the two lecturers. I, for one, am keen to get my hands of some Persian documents. It would be interesting to see Greece through the eyes of barbarians! It could well be that the backwater known as Greece was seen as barbaric to the Persians. After all, were the Persians not driven to bring light (truth) to the Greeks?!Regards,

Hail Atha And respect. 100% do I agree with your commnts. For me I love modern Greece and love to holiday. Mainly amongst the Island i found a laid back genourous nice people I live them.Yet through conversation with Bulgarians etc who I also love I definately hear rasism and superiorism amongst the Greeks even today. Thought the racism was narrowed down to the ancients etc but I am more than aware that its still rife and not nice.I wouldnt offend any Greeks but this idea of Supremecy is far out dated. Greece in reallirty is no further up the economical ladder than those they would refer to as not equal. I would say that the Greek economy was mostly reliant on tourism.Ive never really holidayed in mainland Greece only Halkidiki for obvious reasons and was unaware of what seems still modern racism.I am even more convinced that were Alexander not Macedonian. The Greeks of today wouldnt care less to call Macedonia part of Greece. If you notice the only part of ancient Macedonia they lay claim to is the Part where Alexander and Philip plkayed court.I apologise if this post offends but I dont meanb any racist slur/Kenny

Re: First Hooligan Thug OF Antiquite.
Well, Kenny, the first thing that I noticed after reading this post intially is that I saw a reference to thugs on the news, but don't remember now whether it was Fox or MSNBC, but I thought of this post when some headline was screaming about thugs. No, Alexander is decidedly not a thug! Alexander is an intelligent, refined, and well-disciplined young, very young man. He is set apart from others because of his great intelligence, his birthright, and his unusually gifted athleticism. He is definitely not a thug!

I don't know much about Persia and thePersians, but I hardly think Alexander and the Macedonians were mountainous thugs - after all they did spread culture throughout the known world didn't they!! Hardly something you'd expect from thugs.
