The story is that, in Egypt, one of Demosthenes' friends asked Hephaestion to put in a good word for Demosthenes with Alexander - so he was a friend of a friend, but maybe that's as far as it went.Hephaestion may have had Athenian connections & relations, and he certainly corresponded with philosophers - Aristotle & Xenocrates.Susan

where is he getting this?Ehr...From nowhere? ;)I surely don't remember anything written about Hephaistion and Demosphen being friends.
I do remember, vaguely, something about Hephaistion and Aristotle being in touch.

Greetings,
I seem to recall this proposed, based on some obscure comments, in an academic publication but at this moment I do not have my notes available. I will try to hunt those down.
I DO know this article led to several academics believing Heph may have been from an Athenian family, or that his father may have been Athenian (he was not), etc... those dratted little hints and clues can lead to much speculation!
I think it is important to always remember that, like now, there are always people seeking ways to get through to others- and using the connection of one person you know to another you are trying to reach, or that you hope has influence with another, is a way to do so. Politics and political communication have not changed much over the centuries! I *thought* it was on one of the academic historical lecture sites, or one of the philology sites, but I cannot recall the site address or name just at the moment.
Regards,
Sikander
