"A Young Macedonian..."

Post by Alexias »

"A young Macedonian in the army of Alexander the Great" by Rev. Alfred J. Church M.A. 1905

A worthy - and fairly accurate - account of Alexander's history up to the burning of Persepolis, told from the point of view of a young officer for the edification of Edwardian schoolboys (the edition I have is a school prize from 1909). It is a trifle dull with the nominal hero, Charidemus, spending much time away from the army as an honoured hostage of Memnon, and friend to Barsine, on a naval expedition, or in Jerusalem. There isn't much sense of blood and glory or hardship, and Alexander is presented as an honourable gentleman marrying Barsine, and Roxane and anything east of Persepolis is just glossed over in the final chapter. The burning of Persepolis is justified by the treatment of the mutilated Greeks. There is a lot about the Jews with Alexander visiting Jerusalem and honouring their God, and the hero settles in Galilee. I can only think this is to somehow tie Alexander in with Christianity. There are nice illustrations, but no idea who the artist is.
