I slightly disagree with this as there was a point to Alexander's campaigning: reconquering the Persian empire. In Bactria and Sogdia he was securing his northern boundaries, and in India he ended up defining the eastern boundary of his empire as the Indus and the the Persian Gulf, territory which may have been under Persian influence, and opening up trade routes. He tried to push further in India, maybe to outdo everyone else and expand the empire, but underestimated the size of India. And the reason was because he wanted the fame and glory of doing it, and because he thought he could.
