Alexander's Last Name?

Re: Alexander's Last Name?
After the Greek fashion he would have used the patronymic 'Philipou' the son of Philip; the ancient Greeks had no surname system.
When you think about, it free-choice is the only possible option.
Re: Alexander's Last Name?
Moreover the Greeks would have included in the "surname" the place of ones origin.
So he'd be: Alexander, son of Philip from Macedonia ...Yiannis

Re: Alexander's Last Name?
Or in this case Alexandros Philipou basileou, Alexander son of King Philip, or Philipou Amyntou, son of Philip the son of Amyntas, or even Philipou barbarou son of Philip the barbarian, just for any fans of Demosthenes out there.
When you think about, it free-choice is the only possible option.
Re: Alexander's Last Name?
His full name was Alexandros Philippou basileus Makedonon (Alexander, son of Phillip, king of Macedonia)

Thanks for that, as it helps me to understand why I named my dog Clancy of Clearwater. I had no idea that it could have had anything to do with the Greeks until now.
And here the only person who has ever made me like lamb is a Greek from the Broken Glass restaurant in Clearwater! What a connection. Sorry, folks, I am just reminiscining, and finding it all so interesting. Who would have believed that an interest in ATG would have had such an insight?
