Granicus failure
I think it is much possible that Alexander could loose this battle. In Dioduorus is written that He had to attack next day - not from the march, Green writes that if he attacked this day he had to loose. I think he was bitten in this day and greek mercenaries which came on his side next day was factor to victory. So here comes the assumption that he couldn't slaughter them but he received them as the alliants.Maciek
Re: Granicus failure
MaciekHave you (and others) read the article on Livius about it ?
http://www.livius.org/aj-al/alexander/a ... r03.htmlIt mentions his reasons why Diodorus' account is to be preferred. I think that the roles of Greek mercenaries was generally downplayed in the accounts, as bringing no particular credit to those used them.Susan

Re: Granicus failure
But Susan donGÇÖt You think that if Greek mercenaries attacked the Persians from the back the victory was imminent then. I think it is a solution to all theories!

Re: Granicus failure
Merry April, but don'y you think Livius is a bit confused? He thinks Arrian used Kallisthenes when we know he compared Aristoboulos and Ptolemy and synthesied their accounts. As for preferring Kleitarchos, clearly the author of that site has a sense of humour too!
When you think about, it free-choice is the only possible option.
Re: Granicus failure
Especially that he (Arrian) writes it in his book - that he uses Ptolemy and Aristobulos. But some parts could filled by Kallisthenes also as it was primary source, Ptolemy wrote his story few ears after all event. Maciek
