Re: Battle of Granicus
Hi Rog!
I think main factor was the tactical maneuver - concentration of the forces which Alexander made by sending Nicanor's cavalry supported by one battalion of hypaspists to attack the extreme left of the Persian line. This was to drive part of the force from the middle left of the Persian line
When the middle left became weaker Alexander concentrated all his right wing to attack one point of the enemy's line.
The fast attack pushed the Persians from the shore and then his infantry (phalanx) came up to flat ground and at the back of the cavalry they developed the line and supported the attack. Maciek

Re: Battle of Granicus
Also the fact that the Persians kept their irreplaceable Greek mercenaries useless in the back of their army instead of deploying them by the river banks where they could block its crossing with the use of their spears and heavy armor.
Re: Battle of Granicus
That's true, and we don't know how it would be if Persians would trust Greeks and let them fight. Maybe it was the reason why Alexander didn't want to wait until next morning but attacked immediatly... What do You think about it Yannis?Maciek
