Hecateus and Attalus

Post by Dr. Pal »

Dear Susan,What more do we know about Hecataeus apart from the fact that he was sent by Alexander to kill Attalus? I am curious because in the drama Mudrarakshasa there is reference to one Shakatadasa who can be seen to be the same as Hecateus. Incidentally he is on the same side as Rakshasa whom I identify as Oxyartes father of Roxane.Regards,Dr. Pal

Dear Dr Pal I cannot find any more about him - Diodorus Siculus has :Alexander had good reason to fear that he might challenge his rule, making common cause with those of the Greeks who opposed him,and selected from among his friends a certain Hecataeus and sent him off to Asia with a number of soldiers, under orders to bring back Attalus alive if he could, but if not, to assassinate him as quickly as possible. (17.2.4)but this is the only reference I can find.RegardsSusan
