Alexander's Quotes & Scenes

Post by Thalestris-Alexandros »

Greetings Companions of Alexander! What is/are your favorite Alexander quotes or scenes? My Favorite Quote: "...wherever I fight I will believe myself to be playing for the theater of the world."My Favorite Scene: Alexander jumps over wall and solely takes on an Indian army, using a tree as a defense. And, of course, the completely fictional scene of the Amazon Queen and Alexander, intimate for 13 days until her appetite satiated.Cheers!

HI AMAZON QUEEN! MY FAVORITE QUOTE WAS WHEN HIS FATHER, KING PHILIP WAS DRUNK AT HIS OWN ENGAGEMENT PARTY AND WHILE ARGUING WITH ATG HE WENT TO ATTACK HIM BUT FELL OVER IN A DRUNKEN STUPOR. ATG SAID " HERE IS THE MAN WHO WANTS TO LEAD US TO CONQUER THE PERSIAN EMPIRE, BUT CAN'T EVEN MAKE IT FROM ONE COUCH TO THE OTHER". MY FAVORITE SCENE IS SLASHING THE GORDIAN KNOT. I WILL HAVE THE CHILD OF FIRE VIDEO FOR YOU ON SUNDAY AND I LOOK FORWARD TO WHATEVER ATG INFO YOU HAVE FOR ME.ALL THE BEST!

My favorite scene is with Alexander and Bucephalus, Alexander proving that he can tame the horse, and making his father proud of him. I notice that this scene is the cover of several children's books. My favorite quote is about his blood, noting that while royal, his blood is the same as all the others. He is laughing at himself then, which always reminds me of when I told my students to remember that in my journalism class that I am God and for them not to forget it, again laughing at myself. You get the idea...

This scene - in Malli's city when he fought alone (Curtius Rufus) or together with two or three other soldiers - is also my favourite in his story. For me, it was just great when he got on wall blaks, when his soldiers were too slow, and he showed them how to do it. His defence inside the city was something perfect, what should be put to the movie about him.Second great scene was the "flying soldiers" in Aornos Rock. I like this also a lot.Maciek

Hello,
Favorite quote- at the mutiny in Opis was it? It is noble to live with courage and leave behind oneself an everlasting glory.
He was able to come up with one liners off the top of his head that other generals would have to think hours of before and still botch up their lines later.
And my favorite scene: on his death bed as he answers that he should be made a divinity when his soldiers were happy.
Best regards, Dean.

Ah, you open up the age old question - did Alexander actually make any of the speeches attested to in the histories? Clearly many are questionable, particularly many of Curtius' set pieces like the trial of Philotas. Certainly some are what the author believed the King would say - this was typical behavior for ancient historians. No one would have kept a written word by word record of what Alexander actually said although those like Ptolemy may have remembered certain bits and pieces and perhaps the thrust of what was said. But there is no question that like his father, he had the gift of gab.Regards,Tre
