Why was Alexander "The Great"?

Post by amyntoros »

Now, I know this has been discussed in a thread fairly recently but I can't find it in a subject header - maybe we diverged from a particular topic, something Pothosians are apt to do? Unfortunately I'm having problems with my internet provider and have been losing connection at an increasing rate (and don't have an appointment with a service technician until the coming Monday), so I dare not take the time to search further on the forum and am posting this in a new thread instead - a link to a video posted by a member on Roman Army talk.

A ten minute video on why we consider people - and specifically Alexander - to be "great". Definitely entertaining although not completely accurate. Alexander, as I'm sure everyone here knows, wasn't on his way to a battle when the rains fell and the crows guided him, but was heading for Siwah instead. Still, it's amusing enough and worth a look, IMO.

All the best,

Hi,
This is my first post on this forum and I must say I am very excited about it.
There are certain very compelling points as to why Alexander is truly "the Great", few of which I am jotting below:
1. He was an incomparable military genius. Regardless of the comparisons with Napoleon, Julius Caesar (the list goes on...), none were master of 5 million square kilometers at the age of 28.
2. He is the father of Logistics. Kings, business magnates over the centuries have followed in his footsteps towards greatness.
3. His skill in battle and courage were unparalleled. His death defying leap all alone into a Mallian fortress in India is the stuff of legends.
4. He was an excellent leader of men always doing first what he asked his men to do.
5. Above all he was an empire builder par excellence, a visionary who had the wherewithal to realize his dreams and arguably the best lateral thinker ever ( his solution to the Gordian Knot).

The bottom-line is 10,000 years of history have not been able to produce another Alexander. Doubtless he is Megas Alexandros - Alexander the Great.....
