about some poetry?

Post by parauparisaena »

Hi guys! I got to help a jack going to pass the high school exam, i need to tie English litterature and Alexander the Great. I did not find anything but Mary Renault's operas! But something more ancient is rather my idea of book i'm searching for!
Can you suggest some english texts about Alexander...but not as scientific or storical source; i'm instead looking for clues of Alexander's myth in the english litterature as romantic poetry or novels in the last 2 centuries! I need not study historical texts.
Thanks!

HiThis is not in the last two centuries, but there seemed to be a fashion for ladies to write on the beautiful friendship between Alexander and Hephaestion, and his general heroic-ness - probably not just young ladies; I am sure Byron must have written something. I would like to start a collection of these, but have found only two - I am sure there must be more. Alexander was a symbol for so much - fortitude, bravery, tyranny etc. This is one by Anne Finch:http://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/ ... .htmlThere is also an incomplete one called Alexandreishttp://digital.library.upenn.edu/women/killigrew/1686/ka-alexandreis.htmlbut the author says: "This was the first Essay of this young Lady in Poetry, but finding the Task she had undertaken hard, she laid it by till Practice and more time should make her equal to so great a Work."Perhaps a lesson to us all.. :) She dies shortly after, I think. If anyone comes across similar poetry or references, I would be very grateful to know of them.Linda

Yiasou,Francesco, kai ti kaneis; eimai kala!Constantine Cavafi's poem "In the Year 200BC": it concentrates on ATG's statement about "...except the Lacedaimonians...", and spirals into historical commentary; it does not focus on Alexander, but comments on his statement, therefore, ATG is, indeed, identified in the poem written in 1931. Hope that helped!!!I fili sou,
