Noise About King Tut

It's all a matter of personal preference of course. Egyptian civilization has always held a fascination for me. Such an ancient culture with so much knowledge. The architechture, starting from the pyramids, art and representation, burial customs, religion, mummification, medical knowledge - it's all very interesting to me. Akhenaten and Egypt are on Discovery, National Geographic, History channel and other popular tv stations on a regular basis. So, it's not hard to understand why other members of the public would share my (and Theseus' too?) enthusiasm for a display like this. Hell... even the ancient Greeks were into Egypt, acknowledging themselves to be comparatively a "young" culture. Why should we be surprised that modern people are interested in this display?
Oh yes we do share enthusiasm for Egypts artifacts and to be able to see some of the items I did in Phili was amazing. I have put it on my list of most important things to happen in my life and that is saying a lot. These items are thousands of years old and the detail in these items was incredible. I stood in front of one of Tut's necklaces for what seemed like forever, just looking at every detail of it. Simply Beautiful. The one piece that captured my heart was the little death mask from one of King Tut's daughter's that died in birth or was still born.Semiramis wrote:It's all a matter of personal preference of course. To have any interest in ancient history in this day and age is a good thing. I think the youth of today are losing interest in these things and it's such a shame. If any part of ancient history can spark an interest in today's youths it's a plus. My love of ancient Egypt is what led me to research Alexander and the ancient Greeks and for that I am truly greatful. These two great societies deserve to be remembered and respected because without either, the world would not be what it is today. Ancient history has had a hand in all of our lives.
My children are a minority for knowing about ancient Egypt and Greece. Their friends in school don't even know who King Tut is and few have heard of Alexander the Great!!! Can you believe that???? Their teachers are so amazed that going into ancient history my kids have a head start and know of these leaders. The local college here has dropped their ancient history course for lack of interest. I wish everyone had a love for ancient history like we do here at Pothos.

That is one of my dreams Marcus... to teach ancient history. Modern history may excite some but it bores me. I am happy to see that the school here is touching on some ancient history, but it's not studied near in depth as it should be. There are some great colleges out there that have wonderful courses for ancient history, but to see a local college drop it really saddens and angers me. I really worry that the love of ancient history may be slipping. I am so glad my children are taking an interest in ancient history so I know I have passed my genes along.marcus wrote:Hear hear. And if they did, more schools would teach it, and I'd be able to get a job teaching Ancient History and wouldn't have to deal with Modern History any more. Hurrah! (But soooo in my dreams!Theseus wrote:I wish everyone had a love for ancient history like we do here at Pothos.)

It's always great to see discoveries of anicent items on the news because it does seem to spark some interest even in those that aren't as interested in ancient history as we are.
