Source of the tale of poison

Post by agesilaos »

I realise that much has been said on this subject but on re-reading Plutarch i realised I had been slandering Olympias, in chap 77 a certain Hagnothemis is named as the source and he claims Antigonos told him.Clearly this is Antigonid propaganda against the Antipatridae and since I cannot recall ever hearing of this Hagnothemis I wonder if Hieronymos of Kardia may not be the real culprit, he cites Hagnothemis as his source ,to add weight to a lie and then later writers cite the ultimate source not the intermediary giving this man a spurious existence and us a few headaches. Also there is the story of the decree in Iolaos' honour; this was supposed to have been moved by Hypereides but is unattested although he did have his tongue cut out before being executed (Demosthenes 28) by Antipater's men for spreading lies? Or just because cutting out an orators tongue is like severing the hand of a thief. Let the punishment fit the crime.
When you think about, it free-choice is the only possible option.

Karl
I seem to remember from previous postings that you are in Britain. In that case, the analogy is the tabloids' accounts of the royal butlers' stories.
How much reliance would you put on any of the newspaper accounts? Susan

This Antipater sounds like a beast! He had the Athenian orator Hyperides' tounge cut out, forced Demosthenes to take poison... How can you all find it so far-fetched that he would have Alexander poisoned, especially when, at the very least, Alexander was forcing him to "step down" from his Macedonian regency?!...I knew I shouldn't have come back in here. I'm starting to get upset again...Merry Christmas everybody!! Ho ho ho!!!John

John there is plenty of reasons why I don't belive in it. I stated those in our long discussion so You know how much points there are Other people here gave another good points so after all this I wonder why are You upsed about it. Of course we all will never know the truth but there are reasons to belive in any hypothesis. Maciek

Maciek,Do you believe in the gods, like Alexander did?My above post was the last thing I wrote into this computer... until, BANG, the computer went dead, and the house shook for about 15 seconds from the thunderous sound waves. One bolt of lightning in the whole wave of clouds, and it goes off right next to me! Our whole street was without power for more than 12 hours.I know Xenophon thought it was a sign from Zeus every time someone sneezed. I wonder what he would have thought of this!?Maybe we should stop discussing this poison topic? Or was it my Ho ho ho joke?...John
