Hi Coral,

I'm very pleased that you are enjoying my book. It is perfectly true that the horseman in the hunting scene is sometimes identified as Hephaistion too, although others prefer to identify this figure as Demetrios Poliorketes. I concentrated on the horseman at the centre of the battle scene, because there are better arguments for him to be Hephaistion. There is an absolutely vast literature on the Alexander Sarcophagus, so I hope you will appreciate that there were limits to how much I could say in a single paragraph. For a much more detailed discussion of the Sarcophagus including a Select Bibliography on it (referencing over 20 books and articles), see Faces of Power, Alexander's Image and Hellenistic Politics by Andrew Stewart.

Best wishes,

Andrew Chugg
