Metz Epitome and Heidelburg Epitome

I think this might have been discussed before, but I'm in one of those "can't remember anything prior to last week" moods at the moment - trying to write a college assignment on "assessment for learning", which is (a) more difficult than I thought; and (b) far less interesting than I thought it would be.

Anyway, back to the question in hand - does anyone have an English translation of the Metz Epitome and Heidelburg Epitome in entirety? I have quite a lot of the Metz, culled from those portions reproduced in Heckel and Yardley, "Historical Sources in Translation"; but have been unable to locate the rest of it.

I may be wrong, but I seem to remember that Karl Soundy said he was working on a translation of the Metz Epitome, although I did a quick search of the archives and can't find any record of Karl saying this. However, there is an old post where Susan said she was hoping to have both the Liber de Morte and the Metz Epitome on her site, and she does have the former on there now, translated by Karl.

There's a translation of the Heidelberg Epitome online at http://www.attalus.org/translate/fgh.html#155.0.

I don't know of any complete translation of the Metz Epitome, but Elizabeth Baynham is working on a commentary on it and I suppose she will also translate it. No idea when that will be published, though.

Thanks to you both. I thought that someone was doing a translation, but I couldn't remember who - you're right, it was Karl. I already have the Liber de Morte, definitely, already (not least because it's reproduced in Heckel and Yardley) ... thanks for the tip on the online Heidelburg Epitome, though. (This is an add-on - having looked at it, I realise that I must have the Heidelburg already ... oops! what a klutz ... but thanks anyway.)

One day, when I have a bit of time, I'm going to sort out all my files, which were very organised and then rather went to the dogs - then I'll probably discover that I have the lot!

Yes I am translating the Metz Epitome still, but lent my copy of the Teubner edition out and it has yet to return so it has stopped about a third of the way through, serves me right for wanting to get it checked.

Delighted to hear that you are still doing it (or supposed to be doing it).

I can't remember off the top of my head all the bits I don't have; but I'm pretty sure that the first section 'missing' from my transcription of Heckel and Yardley's translation are chapters 1-19. I shall have to dig out the other missing bits and let you know ... see how many gaps you can plug at this point in time.

I've come across this Metz Epitome several times, what's the story with it? I used the Heckel & Yardley book last summer for several sections in my book.

Well, I've just dug out my copy, which is basically of all the bits that are quoted in Heckel and Yardley. I am missing 'chapters':

  10-13
  15-19
  24-27
  32-38
  46-52
  63-69
  71-86

Everything after that is the Liber de Morte, which I have in full.
