It would be great if sources from his times would be found. But should be sure that all is lost maybe it is a chance to find sometimes Nearchos' log or Ptolemys' diary. I was trying hard but I couldn't find any information how that sources were lost. I've heard also that in museums there is a lot of exhibits which are not catalogued and is their stores is many not sawn "lost" books. I've read that only one remaining source is "Babilonian annuales" but there most importand is Euphrat river level and so on so its has no great value for us.
