Resorceful And Endless Rome

Post by kenny »

Companions I have many times compared Rome its Empire with Alexander and see if there are any comparisons. I think not.Where as Macedonia was a kingdom Empire Rome was a republican organisation ran by the senate where Kingship was a swear word. The caesars even through claiming power through military achievements still were overan by the corporate gangsters. Whe let the loony Emperors have so much freedom but once they actually threatened the Imperialism of Rome they got there end.Throughout The Roman empire we hear about legion after legion and army after army. The Romans could lose scores of Thousands against Hanibal yet still churn legions out. For a City state to produce such numbers beggars belief. Its like Alexander losing his 40000 at granicus then reapearing with another 40000 the week after. It is quite clear Alexander lived on the knife edge as far as elite armies were in regard. Where did all these Romans come from. Where they a machine churning them out?I guess the Secret of Rome is in its resources and man power. Its fair to say or assume that The Roamn army wasnt actually Roman at all.It consisted of Spanish Romans Gaulic Romans eastern Romans thats the only thing I can think of.Where the Greek and Macedonians the last of the Pure Arnies. The Spartns.Theban Sacred Band etc.Kenny

There's also the detail of Rome being a lot more generous with its citizenship than Greek/Macedonians ever were, thus refilling its stock of not necessarily "biological" Romans but certainly fairly loyal citizens.

The Romans were indeed not as "anal" about their citizenship as were the Greeks. That's not to say that they were tarts about it (though they could be when circumstances demanded). Many of the "tribes" of the Italian peninsular had long been pressed into Roman service as some sort of "second class" citizenry. Indeed, this was what the "Italian" (and Samnite) rebellions had been about at the opening of the first century bc.The Roman general put "back in the saddle" to settle matters GÇô one Gaius Marius GÇô was well known to the now rebelling Italians as a fellow much given to rewarding whole Italian cohorts with Roman citizenship when they fought with valour in Rome's wars.An imperfect metaphor, but it's a bit like fifth century Athens GÇô were it in control of central/northern Greece GÇô pressing the subject Thebans (and other Boeotians), Thessalians and others into their wars.

Michael HailIt worked so well for so long. I watched a programe about decisive battles. If you get the chance watch the one about Caesars lost legions.Apparently Roman Legions inder a guy called Valas was totally anhialated by the Germans. And these legions never recovered. It was stated that Rome had at one time 28 legions .The three legions lost amounted to 16000 of Augustus best troopEven as drilled and practiced as these soldiers were arrogance and the cunning of his enemy led them straight into ambush. 16000 men thats about half the whole Army Alexander set out to take an empire. Measure for measure it just demonstaretes the actual genius of Alexander.kenny

I'll have to try and get a copy of that episode - sounds great. Only I'm not to sure if my video store would have a hold of such programmes.
