Hello,Yesterday watched "decisive battles-" a show where military experts, generals etc. show how they would have won certain famous battles.
Yesterday it was Hydaspes.
Well the show seemed to be filmed about two fathoms down in a U-Boat with red lights flashing and all.
Well the boys got hit from the side by Porus's men- they didn't think that it would be any problem for a few hundred men with sarissas and all to just turn around in a few seconds. Also the elephants were an unexpected surprise element. The "crack" generals didn't think that the horses either would have any problem just ramming the slightly larger animals.
But anyway it was a good laugh.
(The boys lost,,,- but like I say, it was a damned good laugh)The historical experts then at the end went on to explain how Alexander actually won Porus which they summed up in about a minute they did get the initial stages of the battle right- how Alexander had trouble crossing the Hydapses with his men and had to play cat and mouse.Best regards,
Dean.

Hi there Dean,I am sure that Alexander had encountered elephants, albeit in lesser numbers, before his battle with Porus.Regards,

Hi,Gaugamela- I think,
But I think that it was at Hydaspes where he had his first real clash with them. IN fact, if I am not mistaken, it was the first time any Greek army had gone up against elephants.Best regards,
Dean.

Re: Decisive battles- Hydaspes
Dean,Yes, I think. Most definitely first decisive battle against elephants...I mean, who would have designed a strategy let alone pluck up the courage to confront such beasts with minimal exposure at Guagemala. Perhaps, yes, it could only be, no it couldn't...Alexander the Time Traveller?!
