Challenge To Pothos Members
Hail With hindsite.I wonder If I can take Alexander. I have Darius troops and on mass I would Place rank after rank of Archers to the Front and on the wings. I challenge people here and Alexander will you still charge at my flanks or my centre. As Darius I would stay put see if you will come on and volley after volley of arrows then I would commit.Just a though companions. Mayge you would form Testudo or a Macedonian equevelent. I dont doubt Alexander would see my tactics and come out on top. But I sometime wonder tactics to take him.RegardsKenny

Hello, I'm afraid i'm in a rush for work so I'll add a quick post on this excellent game before adding one on possible tactics later.Rome Total War, its engine was used for a TV historical battles series, and while the game does have its flaws it is still very good and even better...A user made 'mod' has come out called 'Rome Total Realism' and it greatly improves on the regular game, a map that extends to North East India and many more historically authentic units and factions. The Ptolemaic army for one actually resembles a Macedonian style army now, rather than an Egyptian army of 1000BC!If you have Rome Total War already, make sure its patched to 1.2, and do try out the mod! It's excellent, they've even recreated the Macedonian Shield Bearers/Hysapists well!http://www.rometotalrealism.com/

Hail BorisIve seen these computer wargames.Alas Im pretty useless with those things.,I just made reference as to how maybe Id stop Alexander. In the Stone film he shows consontration of archers. I feel as with Agincourt such tactics would chew the macedonian cavalry/Kny

I'd still recommend giving the game a crack, the turn based campaign is quite entertaining too and plays similar to the likes of Civilisation 3. It is possible to automate battles but then, i'd say its a case of practice makes perfect for the 3d battles! But I digress! As to taking on Alexanders army, I think your right that archers could have been utilised more. Perhaps more use could also have been made of the elephants Darius had at Gaugamela.Anyway, heres my general deployment I would use against Alexander, I have lined up Alexanders army on the lower part of the battle plan, as I believe it was at Gaugamela, the A stands for Alexander and the P stands for Parmenion.Basically my group 1 Persian army and group 3 Persian army would attack and try to flank the Phalanx line. The group 2 army which has Darius would not advance. It will hold position while group 1 and 3 try to flank them. Group 2 army would be heavy in archers to shoot at the incoming Macedonian phalangites, and also if the Phalanx gets too close to Darius in the centre we would unlease the elephants and royal guards. Group 1 and Group 3 armies would have chariots but not the defensive centre army. ---------- ----------- ----------

Oh dear, my battle line has come out nothing like how I set it out in the message posting space. So I hope the forum users here can bear that in mind before I get lambasted for portraying such a strange battle line and a Macedonian one that is nothing like Alexanders at Gaugamela!Nevermind
