Hail CompanionsI frequently read articles about Alexander and the influence or importance of his mother.I would basically like to try play this theorey down to the extreme Alexander thought her a proverbial; pain in the arse yet loved her all the same.To me its been overplayed about the influence of his mother, Ie that he was Achilles descendent or the son of a god. It all depends how he really did believe in the gods and as the norm of the day the world was very dietyfied. Citizens been akin to gods etc so Olympias was not teaching Alexander anything that the commoner gardener Athenian or Spartan was been told. I would guess all mothers regarded there sons comming fromn the gods.With respect to his closeness with her I feel that is overplayed as well. Compared to a recently famous mummys boy Presley who once his mother died so did he.Once Alexander was east he never in anyway wanted his mother with them however much she asked. I do believe he loved her but also thought her a pain in the ass. RegardsKenny

Hi Kenny, I thought this post very funny, especially the reference to Elvis and his mummy, Gladys.I found a really good version of Plutarch's Lives in the Great Book series. It is the best that I am reading so far, as I have only just begun and am up to page 552. It ends at page 576, giving me understanding tha 300+276=576. My number is up!As for Olympias, Alexander loved her as a child, but as a man, when in charge of his life for himself, he had to put his childhood away, and obviously, that included his mother. Yet he wrote to her dutifully as she to him, and that is why I asked about the letters that he had written to her and to Aristotle.Andrew Chugg was kind to me when he gave me Pearson's great work as a reference, and I am very appreciative of that.
