Re: Best Cavalry in History?
AlejandroThanks for the info. If I get round to it ill take a look. I have always wondered about the Khan and how our guy would deal with him.I do think Alexander could have done with a bit of the Khans ruthlessness. I doubt that the Khan had any mutinies to cope with. Nor did any of his comanders dare to even think of killing him or poisoning. The Khan didnt mess about with those he thought plotting against him. But on reflection were Alexander like the Khan then he would be regarded more of a tyrant. Scholars and some writers have Alexander down as a tyrant. But next to the Khan Alexander was relatively saintly.RegardsKenny
Re: Best Cavalry in History?
Issus Would be easy.I would definately say a situation like Issus would be a walk over where the Monghuls would be limited with there manouvers and be bottled then the Phalnx would cut them to pieces. However the roll of the cavalry would be a mopping up rol i guess.Kenny
Re: Best Cavalry in History?
Hi KennyProbably *everyone* would be considered a saint compared to the Khan! :)But I see your point, and I agree that if Alexander had been more ruthless, he will not be the romantic figure he is.On the other hand, and being a bit cynical, he is acknowledged as the first ruler to have organized an efficient PR operation about himself (from Callisthenes to Apelles), so we have to take the sources with a pinch of salt... maybe he was more ruthless than we actually think he is.Best,Alejandro
Re: Best Cavalry in History?
Hi Kenny,It's interesting to note that Alexander began to utilise units of Dahae Horse Archers during his later campaigns. The Dahae and Scythians would have operated in a fashion very similar to Genghis Khan's forces as nomad tactics changed very little from their time to his.Alexander knew a good thing when he saw it!regards,Kit.
