Anyone Know How the DVDs Turned out

Post by kenny »

Does Anyone from Pothos have any idea how the DVD version of the movie will look.I heard rumours that only edits for the gay scenes had been made.As a rule a filmgoes fairly quick to DVD maybe a couple of months. Jet the Stone movie was released through cinemas in Novenber 2oo4 and in February 2005 in the uk.Oliver Stone has had at least 8 months to do with the film that he may have wished with the movie and was hoping a much better rounded effort from him,If indeed he does have a passion for Alexander as he keeps insisting. Maybe he has taken all these months to do a greater justice to Alexander. If all he has done is edit the gay stuff then why the such a long delay for it to come round and if so I guess ill leave it on the shelf.
I was rather optimistic we would get a much better story any thoughts?Kenny

I've got a copy of the DVDs ("Special two disc edition"), and as far as I can tell what is in the film now is what we all saw in the cinema. The second disc contains "special features", in this case interviews with actors, with Oliver Stone, the making of, etc. Nothing that exciting, really.Atlas.

Cheers AndrewWhat I gather is its taken all this time just to put together the 2nd disc of extras,,, Interviews etc. I thought maybe he could slim the Olympias stuff down and the rediculous wedding night scene with our guy growling like a lion and letting his futere Wife put a blade to his throat.I was reading some of the original critics when the film first premiered. One critic adviced to fast foreward to the Rosario Dawson scene with he buck naked... Well i gues that particulla critic spends his time browsing the top shelf of newsagents or the pervs are us chatrooms. Also Andrew I thought the Gaugamella battle scene was close enough... Apart from where Alexander gets of his horse to pull a sword meant for hacking from the Persian hed just Skewered it made our guy look a bit clumsy and besides Im sure an aid was at hand to rearm him.Cheers Brother of the sword.Kenny

Kenny,

From what I have read and heard, Stone has made numerous edits to the film. He has taken events and put them more in a chronological order, rather than the linear order he had them in (i.e. Philip's death will be in the first part of the film). He has added some new scenes and extended some others (I don't know which ones). But, I did hear that Gaugemela has been extended a bit. I also know he has cut some of the long narration, so the film starts a bit quicker. He said that he has changed about 25% of the third act of the film. Yes, he has taken out or edited some of the Alexander/Hephaistion scenes. Which ones, I don't know that, either.

There have been some 2 disc versions out already and I even have a Thai version that says Director's Cut on it. But it is the theatrical version (I don't know why they called it a Director's Cut in Thailand). I do know all that has been released so far has been the Theatrical Version. The Director's Cut is set for release in early August and that will be the time when some countries will get to see it (August 1st in the UK and August 2nd in North America). Warner Brothers allowed Stone to take an additional 3 months to edit the DVD, beyond the 7 months that he had for the theatrical version. The Director's Cut is going to be shown in at least 1 theatre in California, the week before it comes out.

Kenny, if you or anyone is interested, there are two different places where Stone talks about the Director's Cut of the DVD. Here is a link that I posted over on the Epic Film Talk board to a lengthy article in Cineaste Magazine (some may have seen this already), where he talks a lot about the film and a bit about the DVD:

http://epicfilmtalk.com/showthread.php?t=10997

Also, here is a link to a video Q & A that Stone did back in March at Berkeley College in California. He talks a lot about the DVD.

http://webcast.berkeley.edu/events/archive.html (see 3-15-05 webcast)

Both are well worth a read and a listen. I hope that helps answer some of your questions about the DVD.

Just to add to my last post, The Hollywood Reporter had a bit to say about the DVD in a July 8th article. It talks a little about some of the things I mentioned:

Warner Bros. funded the director's return to the editing room for three more months. He took out 17 minutes, put back nine minutes, included four new scenes and 11 extended scenes and restructured the third act. Of course, Warners is hoping that the director's cut DVD will make up some of its shortfall on the film's theatrical release. (The "Alexander" DVD will arrive Aug. 2). But why wasn't Stone allowed to fine-tune his movie before it was originally released? Because the foreign-financed movie was locked into global release commitments.

Stone has also mentioned that in 5 years or so, he would like to look at the film again and maybe do some kind of an extended edition. He says he has a "mountain" of material that he could use. I know I would like to see what he has. I would have loved to see the original 4 hour version, myself.

Regards,
Dara

Andrew Hail BrotherI agree with your comments with the battle but indeed the movie would need heaps of time yto put it in.I feel we must agree that the battle scene has to be rated amongst the best in movie history a real get. I didnt think Hadaspes was anywhere near as good. And Gaugamela was a let down showing Alexander so shaky fumbling around pulling his hacking weapon from a dead Persian. It mabe him look so ameturish.Always a pleasure reading your posts brother Im unaware of any editing.I gotta admit inferior knowledge with your understanding of the battle your eye for detail is good.Kenny
