Best battle in antiquity

Post by maximus »

I have been fascinated by Alexander's ability to surmount overwhelming odds. In have also been fascinated by his tactical genius and power. So, i wanted to find out from many people more learned than i, which battles they thought took the most tactical genius to win, and only win. A few on my shortlist would be
Issos
Meggiddo
GuagamelaI define the list to battles which took place from early egyptian period right through till the First Punic War

It's a bit alarming that your subject header is "best" battle ... Personally, I not sure I've really ever thought about comparisons like this, especially in terms of the tactical genius required to win. Generally speaking I suppose that criterion almost *requires* there to have been one side (the losing one) against a much smaller side (the winning one) - what you don't get in ancient battles is the same types of weapon superiority that we get in more recent conflicts, after all.But do you include sieges, as well? Alesia must be in with a shout, as must Alexander's siege of Tyre (it was, after all, the untakeable city). All the bestMarcus
