how to awe

Post by lucian »

Hey guysI have been given an assignment in class to present a topic of my interest... and guess what? I chose Alexander.
Now, I'm supposed to pick a topic that will be interesting for the rest of the class, and personally I love knowing how the guys lived with Alexander in battle, their habits, what they ate (hence the bread question) So I am asking you guys to cite some good sources for the typical life of a Macedonian/Greek soldier. I have Greece and Rome at War by Peter Connolly, and I will be using "Logistics" extensivelly in this, is there anything else?? That's all for the presentation...Now for the paper...7 pages worthThe reason I chose their "life style" is because I believe that much of the Macedonian way of "soldiering" helped Alexander in what I consider to be his greatest weapon of greatness - speed. That's what I will focus on my presentation - their way of life at war. But I also want to show them some of the other reasons he was great, so I'm asking for opinions, and do name some that will be easier for me to argue to a bunch of college kids who most likely only know Colin Farrell. I want to awe these people, make them see what we see, without having to explain a battle (I'm not really into battles) Besides there is a kid in my class who professionally writes for that Military History magazine, and I think he might tackle a description of Gaugamela! So, if there is any suggestions for why Alex was great (I'm looking for about 5 reasons), or even suggestions on how to present this under 15 minutes...let me know. I do have some ideas of my own, but I would love to read of some other ones!Cheers!LucP.S. Unfortunately I highly doubt that ALEXANDER will be out by May 12th. And I'm trying to figure out a way to download the big trailer of it, and put it into tape format. Regardless of how the movie turned out, I will admit that the preview kicked major a***!!!

Greetings Lucian ME... It appears you have lot's of research to do in a short period, best of luck!
Andrew The Macedonian Coinage Of Alexander The Great by Hyla A. Troxell, Numismatic Studies No. 21. This is a hard to find book but can be acquired through any reputable book store in the U.S. using your computer, there's a good chance they'll have to order it through an outlet out of New York but it's well worth it for the book contains pictures of most of Alexander's and Philip's coinage.
The Coinages of Alexander the Great (S Gardiakos ed.) A huge 3 volume set includes important titles on the coinage of Alexander including: Reattribution of Certain Tetradrahms of Alexander(Newell): The dated Alexander coinage of Sidon and Ake(Newell) The Alexander Coinage of Sinope(Newell), Miriandros Alexandria Katisson (Newell)Tyrus Rediviva (Newell), Funk goldmedaillon on Aus Dem Funde von Abulcir(Dressel), Alexanders Reichsmunzon(kleimer), The Alexander coinage of Sicyon(Newell & Noe): Essays on The Coinage of Alexander the Great (Bellinger) and Numimatique D"Alexander Le Grand, Les Monnaies de Phillipe II and III(muller).Mostly English, Some titles in French or German.

It it was me, I would get hold of Plutarch's earlier work on Alexander (on the Fortune or Virtue of Alexander I believe it was called), show up in proper gear as Plutarch and give the piece as a speech as he would have done. It's not all historically accurate, but it's a great set-piece and quite explains why Alexander was great in a time more closer to his.

I think the idea of dressing like Plutarch and presenting this as his speech is so cool! I'm sure you'd get a lot of applause for it. (good marks too!)

Bravo, Tre!I wish I were doing something similar myself, now. When I was about 8 or 9, at my school's Christmas Party, we had a fancy dress competition. My father made me a toga and a scroll, and I went as ... well ... Marcus.Of course I didn't win, because it was far too highbrow for a school like mine ... but it was great fun. It was a far cry from the Roman Banquet I organised at university (although we did roll Cleopatra out of a carpet, and there was much more alcohol, of course).ATBMarcus

I like it, and I'll think about it, considering I only have so much time to present it. I was thinking of succumbing to my greed and buying the corset from Museum Replicas, and just bringing that thing in as an item. Marcus...alcohol...I like that idea!!! With everyone drunk, I'll get an A.
