Alexander sarcophagus

Post by pam »

First, I want to say thank you to the many people of this site for sharing their knowledge. I am new in my intrest in Alexander and whenever I have had a question that I cannot find an answer to I have asked here and always get intelligent replies. You are all very helpful. Now, my question. Who was buried in the Alexander sarcophagus? Thanks again.

Is that the one displayed in Istanbul? I always thought it was just an ornamental sarcophagus and hadn't actually been used by anyone.

Who would make an ornamental sarcophagus?
While cultic statues eventually moved into
non-cultic situations, like private estates, I don't
think Greeks ever did that with sarcophagi. It
would be like showing off a coffin. Okay, some
painted coffins from Haiti are art objects these
days, but still...

By ornamental I meant by not having ever actually been used (for Alexander's body for instance).
Such as the 'token' so-called Alexander'stomb that was found in Siwah a couple of years ago. Built but never used...for Alexander anyway.
