Ignored Book on Alexander

Post by doorgunner »

I was wondering if any of you have heard of, see, or read "Alexander the Great" by Lewis Cummings. According to the book blurb on the back cover, "Cummings was a cartographer for the British Intelligence Service when he first traveled through the Middle East and Asia. His biography of Alexander the Great is based on exhaustive research and extensive collaboration with scholars at Columbia University." The book originally came out in 1940 (I believe) and came back into print probably because of the hype over Oliver Stone's travesty. I've looked through it at book stores and it seems eminently readable and accurate. No bizaar theories or axes to grind. There are no reviews of it on Amazon.

I have this book, and I love it. It has a wonderful description of Phillip upfront which is why I bought it in the first place. It is a very interesting perspective, and very well done imo. I am only in the first third of the book, however, as I own it and therefore put it on hold til I read all the books from the library. But I like it! and recommend it.My main reason for liking so many is that I discern the variety of opinion held by so many different authoritative figures. For if you think that there are only so many original sources to study and dissect, there are a zillion and one opinions rendered since then. It never ceases to amaze me at how many books one has to read to get a full and complete picture.
