Colin Farrell in Recruit

Post by jan »

Recruit was released in 2003, starred Colin Farrell and Al Pacino. I have finally seen it, and now understand why Oliver Stone decided to go with Colin as Alexander. Like the decision! Give OS some credit after all, despite the nothing to fear in contrived character in movie. Alexander in real life is fearsome! But I still think Colin is credibly cute! Gets all the girls to fall for him, and I think that is what OS had in mind!

Liking this movie so much because it is the real first time we get into the CIA, I have to add a few more words about this film. In the version I bought was an advertisement for the watch that Al Pacino wears instead of the usual chapter list of scenes and menu functions. This seems to be a match for the National Geographic version of Alexandeer which features Robin Lane Fox and other historians. Both feature costs.I just bought a similar watch made by Guess at a local discount department store, an affiliate of Nordstrom's. What a shock to me to see my watch appear in this movie. I would have to travel to Redondo Beach, CA. to buy one that is the same, so in fact, Nordstrom's has come through for me here.No shock to see me quoted in the movie. Just surprised. I once told a student who was trying out for songleader to "fake it". When Al Pacino says this in this movie, I had to smile, because it was not too long before that that Colin Farrell as James had reminded me of when Candy Reed of Charron Williams had asked me, "Why you?" It took this long for me to find out. (I am in love again with Colin now.) Not too much intelligence required to figure this movie out!

And to think that he will next play Sonny Crockett in "Miami Vice" with Jaime Foxx as Ricardo Tubbs. It may be too much for all the girls to handle! To recap on Colin here...he goes from "Conquer your fear" to "Book 'em Tubbs". Dara *wink* *wink*

Hi Dara,
Yes, I just saw a picture of him with Michael Mann cruising Miami. Shopgirl keeps his fansite well staffed with great pictures. I really like the cameraman in the movie Recruit because he spends so much time getting great shots of Colin. And while he isn't exactly James Dean, he makes me think of him a lot. I am really very enthusiastic about him as an actor. He was good in Tigerland.I've been watching Tom Cruise in Color of Money with Paul Newman, and it is interesting to see how these actors careers are managed. I just wonder if the film Alexander will be considered an asset or liability. But I am curious if he can fill Don Johnson's shoes too! LO! He is certainly one actor to watch!I had read in a gossip mag that his brother complained that because he is so cute Colin gets all the girls, and that is why I said that. I could see why from the movie Recruit. I will have to examine the dvd when it comes out on Alexander to see if he is as attractive there or not. His blonde wig made me think he looked like a cheerleader! :-) IMO Alexander is pretty erect in the saddle! Jan

Does that mean you forgive Colin for his portrayal of ATG? (I thought he was fine all along).
Colin has a pretty established career. I don't think "Alexander" will hurt things, any. He has "The New World" later this year which looks pretty interesting. As for the hair, except for the hair extensions, that was Colin's real hair, dyed blonde. Dara

Hi Dara,I place the blame for the interpretation of Alexander as seen in the film on the director and the scriptwriter, both of whom are the same man, Oliver Stone. I suspect that Colin was just putty in his hands. I hope to give Alexander the movie a second time round when it comes out in dvd format. I just read that Dino de Laurentis is still planning his film on Alexander to be made, so there is still always a chance that a different point of view of Alexander may give the unknowing a different glimpse of his talents and abilities. Also, I just found an interesting website: GEN.com which was in Guy Roger's book on Alexander. There is a trailer there for the course which is offered. GEN stands for Global Education Network and the professor offers a course on the study of Alexander to any who are interested. I just left the site and enjoyed its brief description.Try it: You will like it.I just love for movies to concentrate on a single trait in character development as 2 1/2 hours is too short a time to do a life digest. But yes, I have never blamed Colin, just found him a bit lacking, and blame only Oliver Stone for that. Colin is talented, no doubt! Reminds me of James Dean a bit.

Hi Kenny, Maybe it is my Scorpio moon...sometimes one has to get back to terra firma again! By the way, check GEN.com out! It has an interesting course trailer about Alexander on it. Fellow name of Guy Rogers wrote a book and listed it on his jacket page. So I checked it out just a few minutes ago. It has a great slideshow!

Baz's ATG

Post by birdlover »

Sorry Kenny if I contributed to this conversation and got a bit off topic. I was just kidding with Jan (I can see you are having a little fun, yourself).

Back on topic, I heard that the other ATG film is still on track to be made. But I have heard this so many times about this film. Baz Luhrmann himself has said nothing in quite awhile and last I heard, Leonardo DiCaprio had stated that he was not going to do the film. I haven't heard him confirm that he is back in on the project (he's too busy trying to win an Oscar). Until I see some actual movement on this film, I won't believe it. I guess it is supposed to start filming a year from now. We will see.

Sorry, but I am not a big Baz Luhrmann fan, so I am not crazy about him directing a film about ATG. I can't get the picture out of my mind of dancing Macedonians, a Persian chorus line and Greek acrobats swinging all over the Gardens at Pella. I can just picture ATG and his men breaking out into a chorus of "Oh What a Beautiful Morning", right before charging into battle at Gaugemela. Nice touch!

Okay, my imagination is a bit too overactive here, but you get the point. As a director I prefer Stone over Luhrmann. I like Stone's style a bit more. Luhrmann's will be visually beautiful, we know, but I wonder how accurate it will actually be. His movie is based on the Manfredi novels. I haven't read them, but I hear they are not the most accurate of sources.

Maybe I shouldn't say this, but I am not sure how many people are going to rush out to see another movie on ATG, when Stone's fell on it's face. But if the story is compelling, anything can happen. I just have my doubts (or lets say I am a bit skeptical) about this one. But, I could be wrong and personally, I hope I am.

dara hi.No problem,I really have not chased this topic much as to be honest we waited to long for the Stone film particulally in the Uk.So im just gonna let happen what will happen with no expectations,,, Im sure the negative feedback and response to Stone has put a lot of filmmakers off,,, Its a huge gamble.I always maintained Alexanders story is the greatest ever told and Ideally they should all get together,,, But I wont shy away from my support of Leonardo to play our king.regards

Hi Dara,I am laughing at the part where we can see a Persian chorus line. Alexander in a musical would be interesting to imagine! I thought maybe Andrew LLoyd Weber would do it, but like you say, Alexander is a bit of a dud thanks to Stone.I can just hear Alexander breaking out in song: I will cross that river. I will cross that river...I will climb that mountain..Seems that Sound of Music has already done that, so nothing new since Alexander did it first so long ago. HUH?
