In the footsteps of Alexander tour across Turkey - May 2005

Post by Peter Sommer »

This is to let you know that Peter Sommer Travels is running an archaeological tour for a small group (max 16 persons) retracing the route of Alexander the Great across Turkey GÇô this May 3rd-21st GÇô for -ú2,995.Let me give you a bit of background on who I am and what my company does.I am a documentary television Producer/Director who worked on the BBC/PBS series In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great GÇô- with Michael Wood. That was my first job in television (as an assistant producer back in GÇÿ96) Two years into a PhD. on Hellenistic Asia Minor at University College London, I was seduced into television from academia, never to return. Before that in 1994 I walked 2,000 miles across Turkey from Troy to Issus retracing his route. My Mphil. thesis at Birmingham University back in '93, was on Alexander's campaigns in Sogdia & Northern Bactria (the external examiner was a certain Robin Lane Fox).

Alongside my documentary work GÇô which includes Commanding Heights: the Battle for the World Economy (PBS/BBC), and Millennium: A thousand years of history (BBC/CNN), I have been organising and leading archaeological cruises and land based tours in Turkey and Britain since 1996. The trips focus on particular regions, like Sailing the Lycian Shore or Cruising the Carian Coast, or on key characters from history, such as In the Footsteps of Alexander the Great. If youGÇÖd like to know more about the Alexander tour or any other of our tours please visit - http://www.petersommer.com If you have any questions please don't hesitate to contact me GÇô info@petersommer.com Kindest regards,Peter Sommer

Welcome Peter

Great to see you here. I hope we see you
around here from time to time. I'm sure your
observations on Alexander's Anatolian travels
would be of interest to all concerned. .After getting your email I started compiling a
"travel" section for "Alexander the Great on the
Web." There are a lot of tours called "In the
Footsteps"--Wood should have trademarked it.
But nobody takes the idea seriously at all. One
has as its "eastern" portion only
Cappadocia--unconquered by Alexander, so
"Travels of Eumenes" might be a better title.
Others spend their time in Greece, or end up in
Croatia. So, kudos on doing the thing right.

Thanks for the kind words Tim. Yes I'd noticed quite a few travel co.s using 'Alexander' as rather a broad base on which to hang a not especially relevant tour.I know Warwick Ball - a respected archaeologist who has operated for decades across the Middle East - was running an Alexander tour through the Indus. I'll see if I can pull out his details for you.Best wishes,Peter
