Hi All !!!

Post by maciek »

I'm going for my Vacations to Greece at last. I will be someware in Halkidicki pennisua and I will make short trip to visit Pella, Mieza (Naoussa) and Ajgaj.
I have the question because in my computer atlas is no name Vergina - there is Veroia and Veroena or somethin like that. Maybe there is something wrong with that atlas and I will by a paper edition but I'm sure I can get answer form You as Tou are specialists in ATG subiect. Maybe someone will be arround from 9th to 23 of September. Maciek

Maciek,I am very envious. I haven't been to any of the Macedonian sites and I don't think I will get to them for another year or so (but I am going to Siwa next Easter, if things don't kick off in Iraq and prevent it).I have a fairly large roadmap of Greece on my wall at home and Vergina is definitely on there. I think it is a Michelin map but I can't say for certain. All the best - and I hope you find it!Marcus

Marcus is correct - the Michelin map (I've got it in
my office) does mark Vergina, which is about
16 km south east of Veria (Verioa). The best
maps are those by Road Editions (available
pretty widely in Greece) - which have been
prepared with the aid of the Army (apparently)...
I was last in Vergina in May - I wonder if they've
finished the pedestrianisation they were trying to
do - some of the locals were very much looking
forward to it being completed. There's also a lot
of road works round Veria, as the new Via
Egnatia is being punched through the Kastania
pass - but Vergina is well signposted (brown
ministry of culture signs) from all directions.I guess we all wish we were going with you! :)
Have a *marvellous* time! wmp

Vergina will not be a problem for you to find. I was there in July (visiting family) and there're plenty of signs on the National Highway (E-75) which will point you to Vergina. Just head south from Thessaloniki towards Katerini and after about a half hour or so you'll see the signs and the exit.Have fun.

My last question is about Mieza. As far as I know it is now Naoussa and I'd like to know is there something stil like archeological place. Are there some signs to find it. i saw Your posts to Ruth about it but I wonder if I will find out that it is that place, even when I will be there.

The tombs enclosure has been finished for a
while now - I was referring to the roads around
the site - roads in the village of Vergina. There's
one road south of the tombs (towards the palas
site) which when I was there in May was a
building site of crazy paving - Pavlos will have
seen it more recently than I have - where there's
a tavern (Olympiadas), a butchers, a fast food
place, etc. The road with the entrance of the
tombs is also closed (theoretically) to traffic
during the day, but still resembles a road rather
than someone's patio... You also asked about Mieza - you'll have read
my post to Ruth about it - it's not quite where it is
signposted on the road between Veria and
Edessa - the signs go to Macedonian Tombs,
not to "The School of Aristotle", which is
between Lefkadia and Naoussa. You'll find
some good pictures of it on the site Pavlos
suggested (http://www.culture.gr). If you need a more
detailed description to get there, do email me, &
I'll see what I can find from when Ruth & I were
in contact about it!yours
