What was the fourth century attitude to Alexander's remains? The superstitious Alexandrian mob might have been hostile, but I imagine that Alexander might still have been revered by the Christian emperors and their local authorities, for his military acheivements, even though he could obviously no longer be a god.We tend to forget nowadays that deification in a society with a multitude of gods means little more than Christian sainthood. I don't think that even the more megalomaniac Roman emperors ever called themselves more than "Divis" as opposed to "Deus".
