Ephesus
Anyone here been to Ephesus?I spent a very enjoyable day walking about the ruins last week, the population is estimated at 250k from the Roman theatre (25k capacity)Of course ATG 'stopped off' there during his Persian tour. The temple of Artemis (an ancient wonder of the word) that he offered to fund (but was refused!) is just one pillar and a few stones, must have looked incredible before those thick headed Goths destroyed it.Anyway, nothing brings history closer than ancient ruins like Ephesus.

Re: Ephesus
Hi, I've been there about three times. A beautiful site because you can get the sense of the great city it was in ancient times. I've been to several of the ancient sites related to Alexander which are on the Turkish coast. Last year I was in Bodrum (Halicarnassus)and Fethiye (sp). The tombs there are amazing!
I've also been to the site of Troy and to Assos where Aristotle once had a school. I'd love to see more of the Turkish sites and eventually I will.
It's an outstanding country, always an enjoyable time there and no problems. I recommend visiting those sites.A little anecdote: I had a dream once that I was riding with the Macedonian army along a coast toward some distant mountains. We were going north and apparantly returning to Macedonia. Last summer when I was riding on the bus from Bodrum to Fethye I looked out and realized it was exactly the same terrain! Talk about deja vu! (and I'd never been to that area before so it was new to me, but exacly like in the dream.) ruthaki

Yep, been there too, about a year ago. We followed Alexander - well, not in the correct direction, but we visited almost all Alexander sites in Turkey (cf. http://www.livius.org/a/turkey.html and http://www.livius.org/a/turkey/ephesus/ephesus1.html ).Jona
