As a father Son duo.
As a father son Duo, Philip and AlexanderHas there ever throughout history been such a combination where the father was great and the son greater,, or in som opinions vice versa.I look through history to find similarities of this combination and to be fair its very hard to find a comparison even if there is one.I sometimes wonder what Father and son are saying to each other upstairs.Something maybe from Philip I thought i did well Alexander but you did ok yourself I would hope they are up there as father and son and with respect for each other.Im sure that they both loved each other very much, And even if they did I think the competitive nature of both men wouldnt have stopped them killing each other.Maybe Alexander Clietus,,, The same Scenario Philip Alexander a few drinks egotistical booze fueled argument im sure one of them would have been dead meat and how would the survivor have thought the day after.regardsKenny
Re: As a father Son duo.
Just thinking about my last post. The situation where Attalus called Alexander a bastard was a similar episode to the Clietus affair
too much booze some one getting out of hand with there mouth, on that occasion Attalus,Alexander or Philip could have been a Clietus.Too much drink, bad words, at a time of warrior egos, anyone could drive a sharp object through even there best friends.regardskenny

As grandfather and grandson, rather than father and son: the Henries I & II (kings of England). There might be some who'd argue that Henry II and his son Richard I were a pretty good father/son combo, although Richard certainly wasn't *greater* than his father (although if we went back to the atrocities question Richard would give Alexander a pretty good run for his money). All the bestMarcus

Marcus HiMaybe I would be shot or hung for treason,Im English and totally abhore the royalty in this country,To compare this line of spoon fed inherent lazy scroungers to Alexander and Philip really is sticky. Some of the past kings maybe did a little, but inn the British Royal history there is more debaunchery, Inbreeding and upper class snobbery than ever was in the Macedonian court.Today I look at Charlie, Prince William etc with all they have and will never have to break into a sweat to know they will be fed and live lives of luxury.Bring on the republic give our once Great nation A democratically elected head of state not this gang of freeloaders.RegardsKenny

Hi Kenny,I won't get into a monarchist/republican argument with you, I promise! The good news is that, in fact, the early Medieval monarchy in England was much closer to that of the Macedonians. They certainly weren't lazy, they weren't as in-bred as later generations (although there might be an argument for scrounging, but under the feudal system it was all different, anyway).Henry II was incredibly important from the point of view of the formation of English law (only superceded, in my view, by Edward I a century later). He was an incredible military commander and, like Philip of Macedonia, only resorted to arms when diplomacy failed; while Richard I, like Alexander, was more keen on war for war's sake. In fact, the more I think about it, the more similarities I see (although, ultimately, Alexander was a *much* nicer character than Richard, for all his faults, as Richard I really was an insensitive butcher). All the bestMarcus

Marcus hiI really gotta commend you for your knowle4dge and overal understanding of much of history. With knowledge give understanding and the ability to measure what went befor and what is now, sorry for my republican chants, as i am a regular guy working for a regular crust to bring up a family. With society today, kings politics where does it leave us, I must say I respect Diogenes that he was in search of the honest man a simple philosophy but very real, I wonder if he ever found him because I dont think i know honnest men from history.maybe if Alexander wasnt an adventurer or the man searching, he may as the saying says.If I were not Alexander then I would be Diogenese, Diogenese lived a very simple life in a barrel and maybe he lived the best of lives.Maybe the choice is one or the other as life inbetween is a far too a gray area?Kenny

Hi Kenny,I don't have any problem with your republicanism - don't worry about that. Thanks for your kind words - medieval history is my other 'area', but with a few exceptions I'm stumped on anything after 1485! :-)All the bestMArcus
