Smitty,Perhaps they fleeced the dogs together with the sheep (((:As mentioned on one of the sites I posted Sharplaninets has previously (1941) been registered under the name Ilyrian Dog, which maybe speaks of its origin in the Balkans from ancient times. Whether it is a breed related to those captured on the mosaics and frescoes is probably anyones guess at this stage.I don't know an awful lot about dogs myself, but I have a friend who is a kinologist and I may be able to find out more when I speak with her during my forthcoming visit to Macedonia.Cheers,

Matz, your porbably right :)I just thought for those interested, there are ancient pictorial references to hunting dogs, and that it would be a logical place to perhaps try distinguish the breed of dog. cheers!
