Alexander's cartouche (again)

A couple of weeks ago we were speculating how AlexanderGÇÖs name appeared in Egyptian hieroglyphs.IGÇÖve now had a chance to reference my rather over-exposed photo (from the barque shrine at Luxor Temple) with a rather helpful book I have, which has drawings of the cartouches of around 50 pharoahs, and a handy hieroglyphic alphabet.SoGǪ AlexanderGÇÖs name appears in his cartouche as ;LKSINDRS (the semi-colon being a glottelstop that obviously took the place of the A).As it happens, Philip ArrhidaiosGÇÖ cartouche transcribes as PYLPW[S] (the last letter isnGÇÖt clear GÇô my book isnGÇÖt *that* handy); Ptolemy is PTOLEMYS; Cleopatra is KLIOPADRAT[?] (last symbol completely unidentified).When IGÇÖve got my scanner up and working again IGÇÖll see if I can get some of the cartouches and my photos scanned in, and perhaps we can get them on the site?All the bestMarcus

Hello Marcus:Wanted to leave a quick reply before I forget. I'd love to see images of the hieroglypics and of Alexander from the temple. I have a couple of photographed images on my screen saver and an old painted postcard from Egypt (from the fifties) but I've never actually been able to isolate the name of Alexander. :-)Best regards,Linda Ann

Well, I'm hoping to get my scanner up and running this week, so will see what I can do.My photographs aren't brilliant, unfortunately, because the lighting in the shrine isn't conducive to great photos (especially when you keep your flash *on* - and I don't have a digital camera that would allow me to see how they turned out. But with some computer wizardry I should be able to make them a bit better for viewing.All the bestMarcus

Heh that's why I was so dissapointed - I had digital camera!! But well I will scan all I did and maybe together with Marcus's photoses it will give good overview of the shrine. Maciek P.S. My scanner doesn't work completely but I will do it at work;-))

Well it's shame for me to say but honestly I made great panorama picture of the wall (inside the shrine)but in the main part - from left side without... the hads of the figures... My wife after this, seeing how sad I was, said to me few times that we will go back there after two years and we will make 5 pictures in every squere meter of the wall... How fullish I was I could make even 20 picts by digital camera... ehh I hate to be hurry...Maciek

No it would be definatelly bad choice for me to became the photographer... Well and You know I found another strange behavioure in myself... If I have digital camera what do I need for the scaner?? Eureca!! Well my work get's me frustrated;-)))

Hi Maciek,Those are great, actually - far better than mine!But my cartouche picture isn't so bad.I tried to get my scanner working last night but had a few problems. I think I know what the problem is, though, and ought to be able to sort it out at the weekend. Then I'll be able to scan my stuff in.All the bestMarcus

Thanks Marcus but it could be much better. Next time I'll make so much pictures that I could make a puzzle with them.

Ooh! You will enjoy Rome. I haven't been there for about 18 years(!) and I know I hardly scratched the surface when I did. I really want to go back.But first I'm going to go to Iran - that's my grand plan, anyway... you can guarantee that I'll be taking a *very* good camera, and taking *a lot* of care over my photos!All the bestMarcus

I read almost all the time now about the Rome and times of Augustus. The city is realy great. My camera will be ready then;-))Maciek

Do make sure you see things other than the ancient Roman stuff, though, won't you? The Vatican Museum is really good (lots of Hellenistic sculpture there, too), and of course the Sistine Chapel (which has been cleaned since I was there but was incredible even when dirty). I believe they've done a lot of work to the Colosseum since I was there, too - well worth a visit.Don't forget you're not allowed to put your feet in the fountains any more, however hot it is. I've been in an Italian police station and I can tell you you don't want to get arrested!All the bestMarcus

Oh thanks for the advice!! I had some not very nice "adventures" with police in Slovakia... I know that in some countries they like to use the foreigners. Well my wife will not allow me to concentrate only on Roman places - Vatican will be one of most importand points there. I hope I will be ready to sight-see the Rome the same like before the visiting Macedonia. Thanks Marcus!!
