"I get very confused over Pharaohs' names, however. Alexander will have had five names in total,Alexander only chose the first and fourth names, besides the fifth element, Alexander. The first and fourth names were "the Horus, protector of Egypt" and "beloved one of Amun, chosen of Horus" (Meryamun Setepenra). What's so funny about this is that Alexander breaks with tradition, because the pharaohs of the 29th and 30th dynasties had used the full titulature. The only pharaoh who also picked names 1, 4, and 5 was Cambyses. In my opinion, Alexander often carefully posed as the anti-Cambyses. Sacrificing to the Apis made no sense within Egyptian culture, but was a reply to Cambyses (not that the Egyptians will have understood, but that's not my point). Curtius Rufus suggests that Alexander went upstream along the Nile (like Cambyses) and the visit to Siwa was an attempt to outdo Cambyses.Jona

Hi M. Well I'm struggling, plugging along to finish the last bit, weaving in all the political intrigue etc that sets up the final downfall.
Just wish I could get a long, uninterrupted stretch of writing time and a heavy dose of inspiration. Anyway, hope it's done soon! Thanks for your interest. Ruth
