First scene of the Bagoas side
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Alexander
-- Ten years from now, Babylon'll be the center of the world, Bagoas. From here we'll send our fleet to every land on earth! Cities will grow, races will mix and travel, new gods will emerge.
(pause, reflective)
-- and there'll be harmony in the world... And we'll grow old together, Bagoas-- looking out on this world.
Alexander turns from the window, and in his face, we see all the sorrow in the world, knowing his future is short. Alexander
... but I must sleep first--
It breaks Bagoas' heart to see this. Cold is the grave of every mythic hero.
Alexander
My poor Bagoas-- always thinking of me. How vain I've been! Bagoas
(choosing words carefully)
Alexander-- you have given me the happiest times of my life. I owe you everything.
Alexander strokes his cheek gently, wipes away the tears. Alexander
'Happy', Bagoas? To achieve your longing, yes, but when your mind and body are stretched to breaking, when you have no thought beyond the next moment, that's when-- you look back after-- and there it was-- happiness! In the doing, never the thinking.
He fades back onto the pillow, sweating with pain. Bagoas notices how streaked with silver Alexander's once-golden hair has become. Bagoas
(repeats)
... Still, you've made me very happy, Al'skander.
Alexander reflects on this, and takes some peace in this accomplishment. A moment of harmony-- Alexander
(relieved)
--It's done, Bagoas... it's done--
He drifts off. Second scene of the Bagoas side
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This brings serious good cheer to the COMPANIONS, who clearly have never seen anything as exotic as these women in Greece. Cassander
-- as long as we share not the one I like, Alexander.
He need not worry-- Alexander's eyes have fallen on a lustrous, black-haired boy, 17, BAGOAS, with the slim figure of a dancer, his beauty extraordinary-- yet he is eunuch, considered more like a rare third species. Alexander
I think you'll manage quite well without me, Cassander. You always have.
The Companions laugh and individually address the women as Alexander walks over to the Youth, who looks him modestly in the eye, uncowed... HEPHAISTION takes notice as the FATTEST EUNUCH of all slides over, happy to please. Fat Eunuch
Bagoas, 'Great King' -- Dari
