Aigai (Aegae) was the ceremonial centre of Macedon in Philip and Alexander's reigns. The city was the original capital of the kingdom, and continued to be important for occasions such as weddings, funerals and festivals. Philip built a massive palace, the largest building in ancient Greece which would have been visible from most of the surrounding lowland kingdom. It was here in the theatre below the palace that Philip was assassinated in 336 BC. Alexander's friends and supporters hurried him to the safety of the palace.
