She only existed in the Alexander Romance, where she was called Candace Queen of Meroe.Susan

Hi Mary,I totally agree with Susan: Candace, the Queen of the South, only appears in the 'fictional' Alexander Romances that were invented in Egypt (Alexandria) from 300 BC upwards.We must understand that the Romances that were written in Egypt had to place Alexander within the Egyptian (African) context. The kingdoms south of Egypt, on the shores of the Nile and beyond, had been intensely connected with Egyptian history. The Nubian kings and queens of Kush had once ruled over Egypt in the distant past. If Egyptians were wanted to believe in Alexander as the true 'king of the world', it was required that there should be stories about how he dealt with the powerful southern neighbors of Egypt.Candace probably never existed. She was invented, but she reminds us vividly of the powerful Queen of Sheba (Makeda) who allied with Solomon many centuries before Alexander.Regards -

1. Thanks for the reply. At least their are other history buffs out here.
2. I tend to agree with you in that the time lines do not match.
3. Queen of Sheeba. Now that an entirly nother skin of graipfruit. Anyone ever think that King David was not such a treacheus bastard in that the dear Queen had two fires to extinguish ?
